Micromax Canvas 5 Review

Micromax released its old flagship after nearly two years Handset Upgraded version of Canvas 5 Has launched in the market. Canvas 5 has been claimed to give excellent camera performance. Will it be able to create its own identity? Let's know.

Look and design
The 2.5D curved arc display gives the Micromax Canvas 5 a distinct identity. Protection of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 has been given to protect the front panel from scratch. There is nothing special in the handset's look that will grab your attention. Being a metal frame, it feels good when holding it in your hands. The 3.5mm headphone socket is at the top and the micro-USB port at the bottom.

Its back is covered with textured plastic which can be removed. By removing it, the user will be able to install the SIM card and microSD card. However, the battery is completely sealed. The back cover looks very cheap. There is a 13-megapixel primary camera with LED flash on the rear panel itself.

The display is 5.2 inches and has a full-HD IPS panel. It works well in all lighting conditions. The touch response of the display is also good and works well in most light conditions except for direct sunlight. The notification LED, 5 megapixel camera and LED flash are given above the screen. In a way, it can be said that this is a selfie-centric handset.

Overall, the build of the phone is good. Barring the backcover, it is very slim and weighs 143 grams. It can be said that the design is very effective.

Specification and software
The main specifications of Canvas 5 are not surprising. It has a 1.3 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753 chipset, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of inbuilt storage, Wi-Fi B / G / N and Bluetooth 4.0, FM radio, GPS and USB OTG. There is also support for microSD card (up to 32 GB). It is a dual sim device.

The phone runs on the stock version of Android Lollipop 5.1. It has a single-layer home screen, meaning the app drawer will not be available. Micromax has made changes to the icon of its default apps in this handset. You may have some difficulty in using.

In this handset too, the phone manufacturer has given many pre-installed apps, some of which cannot be removed. Micromax has also included smart awake gestures in the handset which can be controlled from the Settings app.

Performance
Canvas 5 plays Daily Work with ease. There is no problem in using and multitasking the common app. Intensive 3D games like Dead Trigger can also be played easily. The phone gets a bit hot around the Micromax logo, but there is nothing to worry about. Call quality is quite good.

It took a little longer for the phone to be fully charged. Benchmark test scores were average. But you will never be disturbed by this handset in common use.

Canvas 5 played full-HD video with ease. Video viewing experience was also great due to the crisp display. The mono rear speaker sounds decent, but feels a bit suppressed. The headset that comes with the handset feels cheap, but the performance is good. Audio quality is very average, so don't expect too much.

The 13-megapixel primary camera surprised us with its performance, especially in day-time macros and landscapes. This takes a little time to focus due to which the photos get blurred in burst mode. Landscape photos are lacking in detail, but the quality is not bad. Camera is not effective in low light.

Users will be able to record videos of 1080 pixels resolution from the rear and front cameras. The output is good, but it is slightly shaky due to no video stabilization.

The front camera comes with a fixed focus lens, but it is good for taking selfies.

The 2900 mAh battery lasted 7 hours and 12 minutes in our video loop test. This would be considered average. In normal use, the phone battery has lasted for a day. We found that the battery level drops rapidly when the camera is used.

Our decision
The price of Micromax Canvas 5 is Rs 11,999. The company has assured this handset to get Android 6.0 Lollipop update in future. If seen, this handset offers a strong claim in the price range of Rs 15,000. Display quality, build, camera performance in daylight and app performance are the biggest features of this phone. We are not satisfied with the battery performance, the time it takes to charge the handset and the camera performance in low light.

The comparison of the Canvas 5 in this price range to the Xiaomi Mi 4i is natural. Considering the battery life, we would suggest that you buy Xiaomi Mi 4i.
