Premium handsets come in the company's 'S' series and we saw the launch of Gionee S6 earlier this year. Chinese company now Gionee S6 The upgraded variant of Gionee S6S has been launched. Gionee claims that 'selfie flash' is one of the biggest features of this smartphone. Gionee claims that its target is young customers aged 18 to 25 years who are fond of selfies with new handsets.
But will the Gionee S6S with a unique design made of unibody metal be able to compete with other smartphones at this price? Learn in review
Look and design
The Gionee S6S with a unibody design feels comfortable in the hands. Its metal-edged edges give excellent grip. But with a weight of 166 grams, the Gionee S6S is a bit heavier by its size.
The front of the phone has a 5.5-inch 2.5D curved display that comes with Corning Gorilla Glass coating. While the rear of the phone is made of metal. The phone has a gold lining in the edge at the rear which gives the phone a premium look. Gionee, like its other smartphones, has given three capacitive buttons for back, home and recent. The front camera is placed above the display with an LED flash.
There is a rear camera with LED flash on the rear panel of the phone. And just below the camera is a fingerprint scanner. Gionee's new logo is under the fingerprint scanner. There is a speaker grille at the bottom with the company's branding at the rear. The phone has the power and volume buttons on the right side panel while there is a hybrid SIM slot on the left side. The bottom has a regular micro-USB charging slot and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Gionee S6S with a thickness of 8.15 millimeters is definitely not the slimmest smartphone available in the market but it did not feel uncomfortable during use.
However, we would like to point out that if the 'Gionee' branding is removed from the rear of the handset, then the S6S could easily have the illusion of being the smartphone of Oppo, Huawei or LeEco. Rear panels of many handsets that come with a metal unibody design are now being fitted with one from each side. For example, apart from the lines at the top and bottom of the handset and the round fingerprint scanner, the placement of the camera is all the same.
The company has launched the S6S in Latte Gold and Mocha Gold colors in India. We received the Latte Gold Unit for review.
The 5.5-inch full HD display given in the phone is sharp and quite bright. We were also able to use the S6S smartphone quite well in sunlight. We did not have any problems with the viewing viewing angle used. The Gionee S6S has an in-cell IPS display. Watching movies and playing games on the phone was also a fun experience and during this time we had no problem.
Overall, the design of the Gionee S6A is quite good and the phone's design is superb. However, the edges of the handset could have been more rounded for easy use.

Users can now arrange the app with two new options on the home screen. With cleanup the new app can be removed from the top or bottom of the home screen. Apart from this, users can arrange apps in different panes with Orange.
As before, the phone has no app drawer and all apps appear on multiple home-screens. Many Chinese handset manufacturers have redesigned their custom Android version, which makes the first fewer apps in these devices pre-loaded. However, the same cannot be said for Gionee as the S6S comes with many apps pre-installed. These include Gionee Zader, Hotoday, Compass, Mobile Anti-Theft App, Zee Store, System Manager and Mood Wallpaper. Gionee S6S comes with its own Shamilion app, using which the camera can pick a color from an object and make it a color theme based color.
Gionee S6S has many features such as fake calls, super screenshot tool, theme park and extreme battery mode settings. Apart from this, other software features given in this phone Gionee Marathon M5 Plus (Review) Was also seen in
The software in the Gionee S6S definitely looks better than the Marathon M5 Plus. The Marathon M5 Plus runs on Amigo 3.1 which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. However, the biggest problem in software is pre-installed apps which cannot be removed.
We did not face any problem during multi tasking in Gionee S6S nor any performance related problems during everyday use. We noticed that while playing Dead Trigger 2 in Gionee S6S there were some frame drops. Apart from this, we also felt hot in the phone while playing games for a long time, but during this time the phone never felt inconvenient to use.
Voice call comes clean in Gionee S6S and we did not have any problem of call drop in this handset. We also spent some time reading the e-book in Gionee S6S and we had no problem with the display. There was no problem in the phone during 4G connectivity, although we could not test the VoLTE in the phone.
Gionee S6S performance was excellent and we were able to run everything in the phone. In the benchmarking test, the phone got decent figures.
We will have to discuss the music app in the phone as it has a lot of tweaking options. The audio quality from the speaker is excellent and we were able to play loud music without any hassle. The speakers are not very good for late movie viewing.
Gionee S6S has 13 megapixel rear camera with Sony sensor. And we took some good pictures with good detail and accurate color from the camera. However, there is a lack of detailing when zooming and cropping photos taken from the phone. But photos taken in low light from S6S Marathon M5 Plus They come much better than
The biggest feature of Gionee S6S is the company has told its front camera. The best selfies from the phone come with accurate color if the light is good. But, in low light, the quality of selfie is not that much better. Gionee has given front flash as well as video flash to make the selfie even better. But this flash also does not work very much.
We liked the Gionee S6S camera app and it launches instantly. We did not face any problem in the app. Apart from this, the camera has features such as Panorama, Slow Motion, Macro, Night, Time Lapse, Text Recognition, HDR, Professional, Smart Scene, Ultra Pixels, Mood Photo, Picnot, Ziff and Smart Scan. Apart from this, the camera app also has other features like scene mode, exposure and white balance. Videos up to 1080 pixels can be recorded from the rear camera.
The Gionee S6S smartphone has a non-removable battery of 3150 mAh. In our video loop test, the Gionee S6S battery lasted for 13 hours and 10 minutes, which can not be called bad. The S6S battery lasts longer than its previous smartphone S6.
During normal use, the Gionee S6S lasted more than a day. Once on full charge, we were able to run the phone for more than 30 hours. It took just 2 hours for the phone to be charged 100 percent from zero. However, officially this phone does not support fast charging.
Gionee S6S is a great package with all-metal design for Rs 17,999. But the company is selling this smartphone as the best selfie available in the market and we were not very impressed with the performance of the phone in low light.
Apart from this, we also did not like the overall performance of the phone and while doing serious work, we felt the problem like the phone heating up and the frame drop during gaming. Overall, the Gionee A6S is a decent phone. We did not have any problem during everyday use of the phone.
There are a lot of phones in the market priced at Rs 15,000, which come with the same specifications as those given in the Gionee S6S. We have to see how Gionee will establish itself in the market. Due to the low price of S6S, the company can get success for this smartphone in the market. The major advantage of Gionee S6S is that it is easily available at offline retailer in the market.
